Upon arrival by the ferry to the Suomenlinna island you will have the walking guided tour around Suomenlinna fortress to get to know the fascinating story behind the World Heritage Site of UNESCO. After the tour, you will enjoy 2 hours exclusive sailing by 18th-century cannon sloop (newly built at 2014) around Suomenlinna fortress. You will feel the unique sea voyages with an old vessel and a sense of history in an interesting and exciting way. The crew in 18th-century costumes enlivens the journey on board. The vessel moves by means of sailing or rowing, as well as with a motor.

Your tour will start from Kauppatori ferry terminal. After 15min you will arrive at the Suomenlinna island, where you will start the walking tour with the local professional guide.
During 1 hour the guided walking tour an authorized guide tells about the 260 years of eventful history of Suomenlinna under the rule of three different states as well as the life on the island today. The guide will take you to the most important sights of the fortress, such as the Great Castle Courtyard, Piper’s Park and the Dry Dock, which in its days was among the largest in the world.
After the walking tour, it is time to take sailing by 18th-century cannon sloop around Suomenlinna fortress. The new cannon sloop is based on the drawings prepared by Ship Architect Fredrik Henrik af Chapman and old document sources of the Swedish fleet’s drawings office. The ship was built using traditional building materials and construction methods at Suomenlinna’s shipyard, which operated until 1808 as the Swedish archipelago fleet’s Viapori naval squadron base. Nowadays the shipyard operates as a traditional vessel center, where culture-historically valuable vessels are renovated and restored.
During the sailing, you will see the fortress from the sea and hear about the fascinating history of the archipelago fleet. The public can choose to assist in raising and lowering the sails, and a few brave ones can join in with the rowing. The journey is enlivened by Admiral Chapman and his crew.

The timing of the tour:

  • 13:15-14:00 ferry depart from Kauppatori pier at the Market Square in Helsinki city center

Please note: Cannon sloop is an open boat, so dressing according to weather conditions is important. Due to the wind, it may be cold at sea even on a warm day. It is good to have a warm and relaxed casual outfit, as well as flat shoes, with you. In case of rain, it is good to bring a raincoat. It is also worth taking a bottle of water with you.

This 7-hour Helsinki sightseeing tour departing from your cruise port will cover the top attractions in the city, but also includes a visit to Porvoo, the second oldest town in Finland, which has become a magnet for many artists. This is a great tour for people interested in a glimpse into the more rural lifestyle that many in Finland love. Lunch is included on this excursion as is some free time for shopping.

As a city of seasons, Helsinki thrives during the summer and, with the harbor serving as the pulse of the city, you will be quick to fall in love after disembarking your ship. Finland's largest city provides the cultural perks of a metropolitan area, while still holding on to the unique flavor that has made Helsinki stand out amongst the capitals of the Baltic.

Your first stop will be at the Olympic Stadium used for the 1952 Olympic games. This event marked the Olympic debuts of The Soviet Union, People's Republic of China, and Israel. The United States snuck out a victory in the medal count by surpassing the Soviet Union by five medals.

An hour's drive beyond Helsinki, you will travel to Porvoo, the second oldest town in Finland. The countryside you travel through to arrive at your destination will give you a glimpse into the more rural lifestyle that many here love.

Arriving in Porvoo, you'll see why it was an important trading post as far back as the 13th century. The red riverside storehouses formed a medieval harbour where salt and other products were imported. Today, they have become the symbol of Porvoo and it is said that they are the most photographed attraction in the country.

Small, low houses and picturesque yards line the narrow streets of this historical wooden town centre. The prize of the city is the Grand Church, first built in the 13th century and now reflecting a profile of the 15th century.

The town has become a magnet for many artists who have lived and worked in the town. Finnish national poet J.L. Runeberg, painter Albert Edelfeldt, and sculptor Ville Vallgren have all been inspired by Porvoo's charm. The town is alive with the work of current artists and writers.

One of the most architecturally unique locations in all of Finland is the Rock Church. The church is built entirely underground and is covered by an oval dome reinforced by beams of various sizes. Entered from street level, rows of skylights illuminate the hall, which serves as a popular concert facility and wedding location. During its inaugural season, it was visited by over 100,000 people.

At the end of the tour, free time will be provided for shopping or grabbing a bit to eat in Market Square. You can either stay in the city and return at your own pace or return to the ship by the tour vehicle.
